Not a True Democracy

With election day right around the corner, it is officially the last week of the 2020 elections. With the final week comes the time to make sure that we all have a plan for voting so that we get a say in what happens. Making sure to come out and vote is crucial in making sure that every voice is heard in this country. Isn’t it? This is a democracy right? Maybe Not.

With the Electoral College still in place this country can never be a true democracy and only some voices will be heard. A democracy consists of the people helping to decide who governs them. All the people, not just some. Last time I checked this country was called The UNITED States of America, not the individual states. A state is a plot of land and it should be the people within it that get to decide the trajectory of their future. One person one vote is how it needs to be.

An argument that is often made when debating about the Electoral College is that it makes it unfair for the smaller states to succeed. This country should not be measured by each state but by each person. Looking back at every election that has taken place in the past two decades, the democrat nominee would have won every time if it had not been for the electoral college. The argument that one party would then take over is not a good one, for if thats what the majority of the people want than that should be what happens. This could even create a way for different third party candidates to rise up as well.

I believe that every voice in this country should be heard. Part of the reason it seems that the voter turn out is so low each year falls back on people believing that voting doesn't matter. That their voice wont change anything and with the Electoral College still in place they are somewhat correct. If you are a republican in California or a democrat in Arizona then your vote doesn't usually ever count in these elections. If we want to claim to be a true democracy where every voice matters than we need to abolish the Electoral College first.
